Catalogue Note
John MacLauchlan Milne is widely regarded as the fifth Colourist due to his close connections with Peploe and Cadell. He was born in Edinburgh and in his youth he had spent time in Canada where he had worked as a cowboy. Upon his return to Britain he travelled to Paris and was greatly effected by the work of Cezanne who had also inspired Peploe. Milne married a french woman and the couple returned to France for part of every year between 1919 and 1932. He favoured the Côte d'Azure as painting destinations and painted with Peploe and Cadell in St Tropez and in Cassis.
