Catalogue Note

The river Feugh wound through Farquharson's estate at Finzean, a few miles from the town of Banchory. In this painting Farquharson depicted the river in its more peaceful aspect upstream, before it falls in the powerful torrents depicted in another of his paintings On the Feugh, Aberdeenshire (Christie's, 27 November 1990, lot 611). Having such awesome and beautiful landscapes on his doorsteps was highly advantageous to Farquharson and he used his own estate for many of his most successful paintings. He painted several other scenes of the Feugh, including The Silence of the Snow (Christie's, 26 November 1998, lot 741) which depicts the old sawmill of Bucket Mill.
