The firm of Clay was established by Henry Clay in 1772. Originally based in Birmingham, Clay transferred his business to London King Street in 1785, and despite his death in 1812, the firm continued in King Street, Convent garden using his name and consequently using this present stamp until 1822. After this date they stamped their objects W. Clay & Co. at an address in Fenchurch Street, before finally closing in 1860
