An early Meissen pagoda figure circa 1720-25

modelled seated wearing a puce patterned gilt-edged robe and yellow tunic, his features naturalistically colored, incised Japanese Palace inventory number N=220-W. Small area of repair, some wear to enamels.

Recorded as part of number 220 in the 1770 Inventory of the Japanese Palace, Dresden: "Acht und Dreyssig Stück detto [Pagoden], differenter Grösze, No. 220. [Thirty-eight pieces, [pagodas], different sizes]." Abraham L. den Blaauwen, Meissen Porcelain in the Rijksmuseum, p. 420, no. 306 illustrates a white pagoda figure of a different form and size bearing the same inventory number, and on p. 422, no. 309, a pagoda of the same form, with similarly painted features, but wearing a patterned robe.
