sumptuously woven with a couple seated on the left, soldiers processing to the right, another courtly couple on the right, with a town under siege in the distance, within a border of mythological figures, chariots, and musical instruments interspersed with sphinx-like beasts and flower-filled baskets.

Catalogue Note

The present lot is similar in style to the series of the victories of the Portuguese Viceroy Joao de Castro in India woven around 1557. Compare an example in G. Delmarcel, Flemish Tapestry, Tielt, Belgium 1999, pp. 125 and 136.
