one with the figure of a shepherd with bagpipes, the other a female figure representing Matrimony, each raised on a stepped gadrooned ormolu base adapted to fit the figure and fitted with three scrolling acanthus leaf-cast candle branches.  Restorations to porcelain.

Condition

Porcelain Figures: Male: is the better of the two, circa 1740-45, but with a number of condition issues: head and left hand broken off and restored back on; upper pipe of bagpipe missing, lower pipe glued and possibly made up. Small chips to ribbons throughout; dog with one ear chipped; sheep missing one ear and hind leg; stump missing branch, small chips to scroll molding on base; figure loose in its mount. Female figure: slightly later date 1750-55, not such good quality as the male figure; repair to base, possibly due to base broken in two pieces and restored; stump extensively restored with made up leaves; hat and left arm restored; enamels appear to have mis-fired and have a matte/dull appearance. Ormolu with wear and would benefit from cleaning; stand adapated to accommodate these figures as described in catalogue.

Catalogue Note

Identical ormolu candle branches and base fitted with two Kangxi porcelain figures were in the collection of the late Tamara Guilden, sold, Sotheby's, New York, November 12, 1999, lot 211 ($37,500).  The candle branches were adapted to fit the figures, as is the case with the present lot.
