Catalogue Note

The present group is part of a further group of reliefs including overdoor pediments, decorated with volutes and swags supported by putti and with marble tesselated inlay in the collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts.  All of these elements were offered in the Salomon Collection sale (see Provenance) as having come from a villa in Bagheria, near Palermo, Sicily, and of the late Renaissance period.  The reason for the inclusion of the armorial device belonging to a Bolognese family is yet to be determined.
