Catalogue Note
To be sold with a letter of authenticity from Christian Gurschner confirming that the piece is from his grand-father's workshop.
The size and medium of this lot is rare amongst Gurschner's oeuvre. In his article 'The life and work of sculptor Gustav Gurschner' (Alte und moderne Kunst, 1966, Vol.87, p.34-39), Dr. Franz Windisch-Graetz notes Gurschner intended to become a monumental sculptor when he left the Viennese Collecge of Arts and Crafts in 1894. Indeed, the monument he created in Marienbad to commemorate the meeting of Emperor Francis Joseph and King Edward VII is thirteen feet high. See The Studio, Vol. 41., 1907, pp.314-317.
