Catalogue Note
The piece is closely related to a table made for the Paris office of the German editor and art journalist Julius Meier-Graefe, where he wrote for L'Art Décoratif. He and van de Velde met at the building site of the house van de Velde had designed for his mother-in-law in 1895. Meier-Graefe would go on to promote the artist in all his publications and thus pave the way for van de Velde's highly successful career in Germany.
