Description

in the form of a double gourd, one side carved in low relief with long twisted leafy branch from which four gourds of different sizes hang, the reverse decorated with two large bats flying towards each other amid swirls of clouds, the stone with a slight celadon hue with the odd minor brown inclusion (pierced and carved hardwood stand)

Catalogue Note

Double-gourds were favoured in China from at least the Tang dynasty due to their auspicious associations.  They were emblematic of abundance and fertility.  The second component of the double-gourd design are the two flying bats.  Bats were also auspicious symbols, as fu (bat) is a homophone of fu (happiness).
