the exterior painted in pale underglaze-blue with an aquatic scene of carp leaping amid flowering lotus plants and pond weed above crested waves among smaller fish and crustacea, between stylised lotus petal panels at the foot and below a border painted with cartouches of cranes on a key-fret diaper ground on the shoulder, the waisted neck encircled with a classic scroll
