Catalogue Note

It is rare to find Yongzheng vases of this elegant cylindrical shape although a pair of vases with cylindrical covers, from the British Rail Pension Fund and exhibited on loan at the Dorchester International Ceramics Fair, London, was sold in these rooms, 29th November 1976, lot 524, and again, 16th May 1989, lot 60.  Another closely related pair of Yongzheng celadon glazed vases from the J.M. Hu collection was sold in our New York rooms, 4th June 1985, lot 34.

Compare also a Yongzheng vase and cover of related form but painted with flowering and fruiting branches in underglaze-blue illustrated in Porcelain of the National Palace Museum. Blue-and-White Ware of the Ch'ing Dynasty, Hong Kong, 1968, pl. 11; and the vase included in the exhibition Ancient Chinese Ceramics, Art Gallery, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, 1982, cat.no. 113, in this sale lot 1677.
