Description
the ovoid body supported on a flared foot rising to a tall waisted neck and collared mouthrim, moulded with three evenly spaced pairs of raised fillets and flanked by leonine mask ring handles at the high shoulder, applied overall with a thick copper-red glaze transmuting from a crushed raspberry hue to a deeper tomato-red, highlighted with brilliant cascades of vivid lavender-blue and magenta, draining away from the mouthrim to reveal a creamy-mushroom tone, the interior displaying streaks of mushroom-brown against pale blue, the base glazed golden-brown with shades of green
Provenance
Hall Family Collection (inventory no.441).
Sotheby's Hong Kong, 2nd May, 2000, lot 536.
Catalogue Note
It is very unusual to find a flambe vase of this form, although the form is known from Yongzheng imperial wares with other glazes; compare, for example, a vase with strongly mottles robin's egg glaze in Beijing, illustrated in Kangxi, Yongzheng, Qianlong, Qing Porcelain from the Palace Museum Collection, Hong Kong, 1989, p.290, pl.119; and another with a teadust glaze in Taiwan, included in the Illustrated Catalogue of Ch'ing Dynasty Porcelain in the National Palace Museum (vol.1), Tokyo, 1980, pl.152.
