Description

  • A Baktiari prayer rug
  • approximately 207 by 133cm., 6ft. 10in. by 4ft. 5in.
with an inscription panel, the inscription reading:
'farmayesh-e janab-e jalalatma¹ab-e  ajall aqa-ye najafquli khan samsam al-saltana ilkhani Œamal-e bakhtiyari fi shahr-e rabi¹ al-mawlud sana 1305'
“Commissioned by His Excellency, the exalted, the glorious Najafquli Khan Samsam al-Saltana the Chief of the tribe.  The work of Bakhtiyari in the month of Rabi¹ I, the year 1305 (AD November-December 1887)”

Catalogue Note

Najafquli Khan Bakhtiyari, titled Samsam al-Saltana (1267-1349/1850-1930) was the chief of the Bakhtiyari tribe and a governor of Isfahan.  He moved to Tehran after the Constitution had been established and was appointed the Minister of Finance in 1329/1911-12.  Later he held the posts of Minister of War (twice), Interior Minister, (three times) and Prime Minister (seven times).
