A Yomud horsecover, West Turkestan,

This Yomut horse cover is a particularly sophisticated piece of weaving; through the use of supplementary wefts (visible in the plainweave side finishes as brown inserts in the otherwise indigo wefting), each of the vertical stripes gently widens from top to bottom, so that each of the flaps is some 5 cm. wider at the open end. Each of the small diamond medallions in the colour bands commensurately enlarges along the length.  This subtle variation in the geometry of the design, combined with the lustrous wool and intense colour create a powerful graphic dynamism.
