Description
- An Ersari engsi
- approximately 175 by 136cm., 5ft. 9in. by 4ft. 5in.
Catalogue Note
The design of this engsi is clearly influenced by ikat patterns, to the extent that the weaver has split the colouring of each of the zig-zag and hexagonal motifs to suggest the broken colour often seen in the ikats themselves. The directional nature of the borders and the enclosure of the plants at the lower end of the field within a soft brown coloured panel confirms that this piece was intended as an engsi. See Jourdan, Uwe, Oriental Rugs, Vol. 5, Turkoman, Augsberg, 1989, pl. 256, p. 283 for a related example.
