Catalogue Note
For a Kaitag embroidery from the Collection of Marshall and Marilyn R. Wolf, New York, with a similar design of two pairs of confronting trefoils see: Eiland Jr., Murray L. (ed.), A World of Carpets and Textiles, (ex. cat.), The 10th International Conference on Oriental Carpets, Washington, D.C., 2003, p. 55, fig. 22. An extraordinary mixture of cultural influences appear in Kaitag designs. Whereas the Wolf piece has a vivacity and idiosyncratic rendition of the motifs typical of Caucasian village pile weavings and Central Asian felts, the current embroidery displays an apparently Ottoman Turkish influence both in colour and in the sophistication and precision of the drawing.
