Catalogue Note

"The Materialist Today" was probably written in the summer of 1926 and published in the October issue of Driftwood that year. "A brief exposition of materialist metaphysics and ethics, the essay sserts that 'mind seems very clearly not a thing, but a mode of motion or form of energy' and that 'all matter is a state of balance betwixt formtion and disintergration. Lovecraft states that the 'essay' was part of a letter to Walter J. Coates, editor of Driftwood, prepared for publication at Coates's insistence" (Joshi and Schultz, Lovecraft Encyclopedia).
