Description

A magnificent commemorative travel album, likely compiled by a successful German-American during a grand tour of his homeland in 1887. The album comprises 17 original watercolors on canvas or paper (largest 7 1/8 x 11 1/4 in.; 182 x 285 mm) and 71 albumen photographs or photographic reproductions (largest 6 3/4 x 9 3/4 in.; 171 x 248 mm), the watercolors and photographs matted individually or in small groups on 40 leaves of heavy album card (14 x 20 in.; 355 x 508 mm), the margins of the cards decorated with ink or watercolor drawings as well as dried specimens of local flora, the mounting cards on cloth guards. Bound in contemporary half brown morocco over embossed cloth, 2 leather straps catching on front board. The bound volume housed in a custom made leather box resembling a nineteenth-century travelling trunk.
