Audubon, John James

The Birds of America, from Drawings made in the United States and their Territories.  New York & Philadelphia, 1840–44

7 volumes, in 4s (10  1/2  x 7 in.; 254 x 177 mm).  500 very fine handcolored lithographed plates after Audubon by W. E. Hitchcock, R. Trembly, and others, printed and colored by J. T. Bowen, numerous wood-engraved anatomical figures in text, cumulative lists of subscribers in each volume; plate 198 bound in upside down, plate 427 with tear in margin, lacks half-titles, occasional minor foxing, generally not affecting plates.  Contemporary half red morocco, top edges gilt, yellow endleaves; some wear, joints or inner hiniges starting on several volumes.
