Catalogue Note

Inscribed on the front free endpaper, "To Mrs. Isenberg, Sketches for 'Koamalu' … May Fraser."  The drawings in this sketchbook served as the basis for Fraser's illustrations for Ethel M. Damon's Koamalu: A Story of Pioneers on Kauai and of What They Built in That Island Garden (Honolulu, 1931).  In addition to landscape and architectural drawing, sketches of furniture, household goods and a few botanical speciemns are also included.

Juliette May Fraser (1887–1983) was born in Honolulu and "rose to be dean of island painters and one of Hawaii's 'living treasures'" (Day, History Makers of Hawaii).  Her murals can be seen in a number of locations in Hawaii, including the Hawaii State Library, the Ala Moana Hotel, and the Hamilton Library at the University of Hawaii.
