Kynnersley, scion of an old Staffordshire family, was on the island of Oahu in the martial law period after the deposition of Queen Liliuokalani: "I am glad to say that I escaped any annoyance during the late troubles of martial law; the authorities took every advantage arresting and keeping in jail for six months or more numbers of un-offending persons on the island of O[a]hu, when it was in force, then letting them go without any inquiry or explanation; before raising martial law which was only done this month, the Councils passed an act indemnifying all hands on their side against civil actions for damages or illegal actions; how far foreign governments will allow it with reference to their own subjects is doubtful."

He goes on to characterize the native uprising as "premature and unorganised and never was the least dangerous. ... The end is not yet and the Government has considerably weakened itself by ill advised actions."
