Catalogue Note
First edition. Although Nottage's consumptive travelogue also touches on Egypt, Australia, Samoa, California, and Mexico, he happened to arrive in Hawaii "just days prior to the overthrow of the monarchy, and the lengthy section of the text that he devotes to this event is the most important part of his book" (Forbes).
Presentation copy, inscribed by Nottage on the half-title "To his Mother with the Author's love." Above the inscription, Mrs. Nottage has signed and dated the book "Xmas 1893."
