Catalogue Note

appointment to the queen's privy council.

This appointment was made at a critical time. King Kalakaua had recently died (20 January), and his sister Liliuokalani acceded to the throne. She gathered around her a cabinet of individuals who supported her concept of the monarchy, incurring the wrath of the Bush-Wilcox crowd, which found expression in the columns of the Bush-owned newspaper Ka Leo o ka Lahui. The paper called insistently, but in vain, for a new slate of privy councillors.
