Catalogue Note

Opposition to the reciprocity treaty

Brown, who in another publication is styled “Ex-Special Treasury Agent U.S.”, discusses Hawaiian sugar, the “pernicious results” of the reciprocity treaty, the loss of U.S. revenue, treaty violations by Hawai’i and “Pacific Coast monopolists,” and the impending threat of annexation. He believes that annexation would bankrupt native Hawaiian sugar planters, and that the application of U.S. laws would result in foreclosures.
