Catalogue Note

A presentation copy of the first edition of "One of the classic (and most often quoted) books on the Hawaiian Islands," inscribed on the half-title: "Dr. Howard With the Author's affecte. regards, Feb. 24. 1875" (Forbes).

Presentation copies of any of Bird's celebrated epistolary travel books are extremely uncommon. The recipient of this volume was likely one of the many physicians who treated the chronically ill—but nonetheless peripatetic—author.
