bills for school supplies
Both Dwight Baldwin (1798-1886) and Samuel Castle (1808-1894) came to Hawai’i as missionaries, but Baldwin went on to become a physician as well as preacher around the island of Maui, while Castle’s experience with financial accounting helped him to develop the firm of Castle & Cooke. Baldwin supervised all the church schools on Maui and it is apparently in this capacity that he is billed for supplies including a map of Palestine, and 16 yards of gingham. His account for 1 August 1850 lists bills paid to Mr. Damon, to Charles Fanen, and for “publications for 1850”.
The postscript notes that “Judge Lee wanted your name on Committee at the late agricultural convention and I felt so certain you would approve and forward the object that I paid $5.00 and your name was enrolled. If wrong, let me know and I will do what I can to right it.”
