Fitzpatrick, The Early Mapping of Hawaii, pp. 112–113; Forbes, Hawaiian National Bibliography 1383; Sabin 19992

Catalogue Note

First edition, first issue, of an important history of the missionary movement in Hawaii. It also contains a map of the islands printed at Lahainaluna but lacks the appendix (pages 453–464) and 4 engraved plates which appeared in later issues.

A good copy associated with the American Mission in Hawaii. The book is inscribed: "Miss Maria Partridge, from her affectionate sister, Mercy P. Whitney." Mercy Whitney was one of the first American women to reach Hawaii, arriving in 1820 with her husband, the Reverend Samuel Whitney. She remained in Hawaii for the rest of her life.  The book is inscribed to her sister Maria, who resided in their hometown of Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
