Catalogue Note

A fine letter from Lorrin Andrews, first head of the Lahainaluna Seminary, to G. P. Judd, a medical missionary, who arrived with the Third Company of missionaries in 1828.  In 1842, Judd left mission work to become a counselor to King Kamehameha III, who made him secretary of state for foreign affairs three years later.  In this letter, Andrews sends Judd six copies of Ka Lama Hawai'i, the first newspaper published west of the Rockies.  He also request that Judd send him a map of Hawai'i.

The fine engraved view is after Edward Bailey by Kopeau and depicts the Female Seminary, Wailuku.
