Lucia lyons remarks on her life as a school-teacher and missionary
Lucia Garrett Smith married Lorenzo Lyons (1807-1886) in 1838, a missionary stationed at Waimea, Hawai’i. She is writing to Angeline, wife of Samuel Northrup Castle (1808-1894), a missionary who handled supplies and financial accounts of the mission, which he built into the firm Castle & Cooke.
“My school, it goes on and increases in interest daily. Not interest in things of Eternity however. Here they are very stupid indeed. Nor is it strange, while their teacher feels so little, the powers of the world to come.” Lucia also asks her friend to send calico, gingham, flannel and linen for skirts.
