Catalogue Note

First English edition, translated from the German by H. E. Lloyd. Kotzebue's expedition took him to Chile, Easter Island, the Marshall Islands, Hawaii, and the North American coast where he searched unsuccessfully for a passage to the Arctic Ocean. The narrative provides the last account of Hawaii during the reign of King Kamehameha I. Also included is a famous plate of the king in his red vest, which was engraved after a portrait painted from life.

Additionally, Kotzebue's discoveries along the Northwest Coast were among his noteworthy contributions. There are also descriptions of flora, fauna, and the native inhabitants of California.
