Description
- A seated wood figure of Venice personified
Provenance
Villa Medicea di Guiseppe Bellini a Marignolle, Florence
Sold Palazzo Corsini, 15th October 1976, lot 390
Catalogue Note
Although the group may be identifiable as an allegory of Abundance, the cornucopia filled with coins rather than fruit or flowers and the fact that the woman is seated on a lion do not fit with her iconography. The coins raise the possibility that the group represents Fortune. Another, more likely, possibility is that the crowned figure, seated on a lion represents the personification of Venice.
