Catalogue Note

Formerly one of a set, of which a portrait of the emperor Domitian from the same series, inscribed DOM on the identical cartouche, was sold Sotheby's New York, 12th January 1991, lot 70. The busts of Caligula and Claudius sold in the Robert Strauss sale at Christie's, 3rd May 1977, lot 88 are also similar, if very slightly larger.
