Catalogue Note

This finely carved ivory panel, the left panel of a diptych, is carved with a rare depiction. It is centred by the Virgin as a child with a book holding the hand of St. Anne, her mother, and to her left her father St. Joachim, with a crook in his left hand. The right panel of the diptych may also have illustrated the life of the Virgin. Compare in particular to the Cluny ivory relief of St. Joseph contemplating the Pregnancy of the Virgin to which the present panel is stylistically related. Compare the headdress of St. Anne with that on the figure of the Virgin in the Archaeological Museum Milan.
