Catalogue Note

St Agnes' attribute of the lamb was most probably given to her because of the closeness of her name to the Latin agnus meaning 'lamb'. Agnes actually comes from the Greek, meaning 'chaste'. In the context of the martyr saint it also refers to Christ, the Lamb of God.
