Description

  • a polychrome limewood relief of the Virgin and Child
the crowned Virgin holding the playful Christ Child in her arms, her hair falling in long tresses onto her shoulders, polychromy refreshed

Catalogue Note

The present group can be compared with a limewood figure of the Virgin, missing the Christ Child, illustrated by Müller (no.99). Note the crisp heavy folds of drapery, uncovered hair and especially the design of the round-necked, belted bodice with its central pleats below the waist. The Virgin illustrated by Müller is dated to 1500 and there attributed to the circle of the workshop of Michael and Gregor Erhart.
