Catalogue Note

Alberic Graupensberger was probably the son, or close relative, of the well known Franconian scuptor Veit Graupensberger.  Veit was responsible for the scuptures of John Nepomuk and flanking angels in the chancel of the Parish church of Pettstadt near Bamberg (1760). For more information on Veit, see Beatrice Trost's Die Bildhauerfamilie Mutschele. The inscription appearing on the present bust, J.R.D.M. aetatis XLVI, probably represents the sitter's initials and identifies his age at 46. The socle, in the form of the base of a column, is also of terracotta and probably contemporary.
