Description

  • a lifesize walnut figure of a seraph
finely carved with flowing drapery, right arm raised, on later base

Catalogue Note

This lifesize figure of an angel would originally have been one of a pair and part of an architectural ensemble. The arms are extended upwards either to support or in adoration. Compare with the angels surmounting the altar and supporting a crown in Bergamo Cathedral from the workshop of Andrea Fantoni (1709-1727) and those surmounting the organ loft in a drawing from the workshop of Andrea Fantoni and dating to circa 1693.
