Description
- a grey and white marble group of a dog
grappling a monster's head, a collar about his neck whilst bearing his teeth, the open mouth possibly formerly the receptacle for ink
Provenance
Sold in these rooms 6 July 1995 lot 165
Catalogue Note
This small marble group presumably intended as an inkwell rather than an oil lamp appears to be inspired by antique prototypes. Note in particular the classical variegated marble groups of animals in the sala degli animali of the Museo Pio Clementino in the Vatican.
