the seated crowned Madonna with the crowned Child on her left knee, the Child's right hand missing, the Madonna's left hand missing, with later paint

Catalogue Note

The present model belongs to a Spanish genre of iconic enthroned Virgin and Child groups dating from the 12th to the 14th Centuries, of which there are several examples in the Museu Diocesà de Lleida. The Virgin, seated with the Christ Child on her left knee on an escabel, a small bench without a back, can be closely compared to another polychromed wood group in the collection of the Hispanic Society of America. The rigid upright pose, the gathered, round neckline and low waist of the Virgin's gown, and the soft folds of drapery around the feet are all reminiscent of the Hispanic Society's group.
