Catalogue Note

This medallion of Christ would most probably have been used to decorate the border of an icon. This use of enamels is seen in the eleventh century icon frame in the Dumbarton Oaks collection which includes enamels of Christ, the Virgin and St. John, St. Peter and Paul, the archangels Michael and Gabriel and the prophet Elijah.

Compare with the glass cameo of St. Demetrius in the British Museum illustrated by Buckton.
