Catalogue Note

French mezzo-soprano Emma Calvé (1858-1942) is shown on the present lot (and in black on one of the cases of Lot 160) in her role as Carmen, which she first performed in Paris and then London and America, hailed as the greatest interpretation of Bizet's heroine to date.
