Catalogue Note
The Loyal Sheffield Volunteers was raised as an artillery company in April 1794 to respond to the declaration of war against Britain by France. One of the many independent volunteer forces, it lasted only as long as the immediate crisis and was disbanded in 1802. It was commanded by Captain James Shemeld (see Major F.W.Hardwick, Sheffield 1911, History of the Sheffield Artillery Volunteers).
