Catalogue Note

This chair was designed by van der Rohe for the German Pavillion at the Barcelona Exhibition of 1929. Early pieces from the period 1929-1932 were manufactured using a jointed construction, as seen in the current lot, by the Berliner Metallgewerbe Josef Muller and then by Bamberg Mettalwerkstatten. However, recent discussion has suggested that a limited number of pieces were made with this technique later, in the 1940s. Post War pieces were produced with a welded construction by Knoll International.
