Description

  • Eglon Hendrick van der Neer
  • an elegant lady and her maid standing in front of a dressing table in an interior
  • oil on panel
  • 54.5 by 40.3 cm.

Condition

The illustration is representative of the actual painting. The panel consists of two vertical planks. The upper and lower edge are slightly bevelled. A large vertical crack of approximately 16 cm running from the lower centre has been repaired and retouched, as is visible on the catalogue illustration. The paint surface is slightly abraded in places, mainly in the brown and green tones. Discoloured retouchings can be seen throughout, e.g. in the windowpanes upper left, to the background upper right, and in the draperies on the bed and of the woman on the right. Inspection under ultra violet light confirms these retouchings and reveals additional scattered retouchings throughout. The paint surface is under an uneven layer of varnish as well as under a fine layer of dirt. Offered in a later plain gilt wood frame in fair condition. (MW)
