Catalogue Note

J.G. Doppelmayr (1677?-1750), Nuremberg astronomer, cartographer and professor of mathematics, began work on celestial charts in 1720 but only in 1728 he produced his first globe. In 1730 he added a celestial globe and the present globe of 20 cm, both celestial globes based in part on the work of Johannes Hevelius (1611-1687). Doppelmayr or his heirs revised his globes around the time of his death, and once more revised in the 1790s and early 1800s.
