Of true inner/outer case construction, the external case with 19th century japonnerie decoration, the exterior with gilt running scrolling foliage on a red ground, the interior of the lid with further scrolling foliage inhabited by exotic birds and with two panels depicting hunting scenes, all on black ground, engraved brass hinges, the main instrument case of cypress, the soundboard surround, front board, jackrail and faciaboard decorated en suite with the lid interior, the keyboard compass, probably with short octave in the bass, C/E to f3, with arcaded boxwood naturals and ebonised accidentals with gilt foliate decoration, the cheeks carved with harpies, the spruce soundboard with inset pierced parchment rose, two 8ft registers, on gilded frame stand with scrolling legs and curved stretchers
