Catalogue Note

Although this model is unidentified, the facial features, truncation and overall composition of the present bust are very similar to both Houdon's portraits of La Comtesse de Sabran (Poulet, op. cit., fig. 7) and Mme de Vermenoux (Poulet, op. cit., cat 31).  Furthermore, the back of the bust is comparable to that of Houdon's plaster bust of his wife (Poulet, op. cit., p. 136).
