A fine Pair of Italian Rococo Giltwood Armchairs Mid 18th Century, Venice

Description

  • height 42 1/2 in.; width 24 1/2 in.
  • (108 cm; 62.2 cm)
each cartouche-shaped backrest with a shell-carved top rail, the armrests carved with bellflowers on voluted supports, the leaf-carved seat raised on cabriole legs carved at the knees with tassles and ending in claw and ball feet. Restored.

Armchairs of similar overall design are illustrated, G. Morazzoni, Il Mobile Veneziano del '700, Milan, 1958.  One with a virtually identical backrest, armrests, armrest supports and legs with claw and ball feet, in stained wood, is reproduced, pl. XLVII, fig. c.
