Catalogue Note

Since 1973, Kim Tschang-Yeul has been captivated by water drops.  His engagement with water drops came as an attempt to turn affirmatively back towards Eastern teachings after spending seven years in New York and Paris.  Despite early doubts about whether water drop paintings would qualify as works of art, he has perfected the volumetric rendering and liquidy texture of his chosen subjects.  Although they appear realistic, there are no reflections of the outside world in his droplets. Instead, he creates a self-contained world of transparency and nothingness, which, according to Eastern teachings, is the "origin of being."  His plump water drops, which seem as if they might trickle down the canvas and disappear, capture the ever-changing quality of nature.
